The Mission

Producing records with an authentic retro vibe is not an easy feat. Patrizio Simonini of MyBestFault and songwriter Jacopo Et, both with decades of experience in mixing, entrusted Panorama to master their record. 

Patrizio was no amatuer. His celebrated career and incredibly discerning ear meant his expectations for the project were high, and he could afford to lay down some stringent requirements: an uncompromising mastering process, fast delivery of the master in the correct formats, communication that was effective and direct, and a process devoid of any ego. 

The Process

The mastering process ran smoothly. Patrizio provided  me with a mix and a reference master he created. The reference master was his vision of how he wanted the final production master to sound. These references were beneficial, as I could hear how he tried to push and pull the original mix, and to what extent. 

The mastering sessions consisted of cleaning up subtle discrepancies in the mix, listening to the reference master and identifying opportunities for improvement, then going ahead and getting it to that "sweet spot".

All the mixes were harmonically rich and intricate, as often is with synth-heavy music. It required heavy attention to minute details when pushing levels, carefully a/b ing each tenth of a decibel increment into the converters to ensure that the depth created in the mix was preserved into the final master.

The Results

Patrizio continued to send me mixes with references, and this allowed me to reinterpret and realize his goals. It was the trust and no-nonsense relationship between Patrizio and I that enabled us to create a unique workflow that worked and ultimately, produced results.
